One of the funniest LOLcats I've ever seen. Probably just me. We didn't have call-and-response in the evangelical fundamentalist church I was raised in, and I always liked that part of the ritual while attending Anglican services for baptisms or weddings or whatall with Husband's family. I found it absolutely hilarious that the logical LOLcat "response" would be "srsly".

Major LOLZ go to Star Trek fan Brian, who - knowing of my affection for LOLcats - sent me a link to an instant internet classic: the much-loved Star Trek episode "The Trouble with Tribbles" done LOL-style.

Anil Dash has a nice article about Lolcats and more specifically about the language they speak, which he calls "kitty pidgin". I'm a regular participant in the I Can Has Cheezburger comments threads, finding them an excellent break a couple of times a day and sure to generate a smile, and I have been fascinated by being part of the real-time evolution of what has been variously described a dialect, a creole, or as Dash describes it, a pidgin language. Lolcat has distinct rules of syntax and grammer that continue to develop organically, and, thanks to the internet, among a large group of people over a very short time. In fact, a number of linguists are keeping an eye on it, as are - not surprisingly - advertisers.

LOLmemes

Ah, the lolcats. You either love them or you hate them. And it appears they've spawned an unstoppable juggernaut of lolmemes which takes the style, vocabulary and in-jokes of LOLcats to a variety of other environments and themes, from LOLing the entire Rocky Horror Picture Show to LOL(scientific)Theorists. (Laughing Squid has a good list of the various LOL sites.)

During lunch today I visited LOL80s. It's heavily 80s-music referential, so being a teenager during that decade heightens the experience considerably. Since I turned 15 in 1980 and 25 in 1990, I was in a fine place to have my experience heightened. Like most unedited, user-submitted threads it had offerings ranging from just plain unfunny, to incomprehensible, to mildly amusing, to extremely funny. These three in particular just slayed me:

Web Time-waster of the Week [Updated] [Updated again]

Oh, noes! What a time-sink!

Thanks to a slideshow article on Slate.com, I have been introduced to lolcats (a.k.a. "cat macros"), and to the mother lode of lolcats at icanhascheezburger.com (scroll down - the pics are posted atop one another, blog-style).

It all started when someone posted a picture of an earnest-looking Russian Blue cat to a web forum with the plaintive caption, "I can has cheezburger?" Someone responded with an edited picture of the same cat and a cheeseburger with the words "No you can't has cheezburger (not yours)." Thus was born an in-joke that became a meme that became a website hosting hundreds of photos of cats with their thoughts captioned in a very weird yet very catlike pidgin English. (The beginnings of the site are outlined here.)

Definitely an add to the bored-at-work list, right along with MyCatHatesYou.com .

Update: In the comments section, Rob (hmm, would that be Rob of the Autographed Cat? one wonders?) helpfully points us to http://cat_macros.livejournal.com/ , the sister site to the dog site mentioned above. The difference between cat_macros.livejournal.com/ & sister site community.livejournal.com/dog_macros/, and icanhascheezburger.com, is that the latter has a pair of editors who accept submissions and decide which lolcats to post, adding several every day; the cat_macros and dog_macros sites are both livejournal blogs, and anyone with a livejournal account can post their submissions, giving it more of a "live feed" feel and allowing anyone to participate. Each is fun in its own way.

Also in comments, Sherwood takes the opportunity of my mentioning MyCatHatesYou.com to remind me of his boy Alnitak's star turn on the site. Day-um, get that cat some A-1 sauce, stat!

Update again: Speakin' of Sherwood, special shout-out to him, 'cuz I thought of his astronomer self when I discovered this not-lol-but-instead-beautifully-profound cat_macro.
